The history of the heroic ship and its crew

The ORP Orzeł was launched on January 15, 1938, at the Dutch shipyard De Schelde in Vlissingen. It was the first unit of the Orzeł class, designed in cooperation with Polish specialists and modeled on the Dutch ship Hr.Ms. O 16.

The ship was 84 meters long and had a design diving depth of 80 meters, although in practice it could descend to 100 meters. The diesel-electric propulsion allowed it to reach a speed of 19.4 knots on the surface and 8.9 knots submerged.

The ORP Orzeł participated in the defense of the coast in 1939. Interned in Tallinn, it carried out one of the most famous escapes in the history of naval warfare. Deprived of maps, it continued its patrol in the Baltic Sea and then passed through the Øresund strait to Great Britain. Equipped with 12 torpedo tubes, it made history by sinking the German freighter Rio de Janeiro in the North Sea in 1940.

Unfortunately, the ship disappeared under mysterious circumstances at the turn of May and June 1940. Its fate remains a mystery to this day.
