Why Marshal Józef Piłsudski and Kasztanka? Piłsudski was one of the central figures in Poland’s 20th‑century history. He founded the Polish Legions, played a decisive role in restoring independence in 1918, and served as Commander‑in‑Chief during the Polish–Bolshevik War of 1920. His strategy in the Battle of Warsaw — often referred to as the “Miracle on the Vistula” — is credited with safeguarding both the newly reborn Polish state and Europe from Bolshevik expansion.
