History of the Sopwith F.1 Camel
The Sopwith F.1 Camel was one of the most effective fighter aircraft of World War I. Entering service in 1917, it became renowned for its exceptional maneuverability; its pilots achieved more aerial victories than those flying any other Allied fighter of the conflict.
The COBI model depicts the aircraft flown by George A. Vaughn Jr., a replica of which is currently housed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Although the aircraft belonged to the American 17th Aero Squadron, it retained British RAF markings; this was because the unit operated within the British air force structure and American pilots flew machines supplied by the RAF.

George A. Vaughn Jr., a Great War fighter ace
George Augustus Vaughn Jr. was one of the most distinguished American aces of World War I. In 1918, he served first in the British RAF and subsequently in the United States Air Service’s 17th Aero Squadron, which was equipped with Sopwith Camel aircraft.
During the war, he achieved 13 aerial victories and received the highest military honors from both the United States and Great Britain.
