At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte sought dominance in Europe, but his plans to invade Great Britain were thwarted by the Battle of Trafalgar, fought on October 21, 1805, off the coast of Spain.

The British fleet was commanded by Admiral Horatio Nelson from HMS Victory. The battle ended with a crushing Royal Navy victory over the Franco-Spanish fleet, although Nelson himself was killed in action. The victory secured Britain's dominance of the seas and prevented Napoleon from invading the British Isles.
