The Ardennes 1944 - 1945

The Battle of the Ardennes-more widely known as the Battle of the Bulge-raged from December 1944 to January 1945. Capitalizing on the harsh winter conditions, the mountainous and heavily forested terrain and the element of surprise, German forces launched a massive offensive in an attempt to breach Allied lines and shatter their forces. The German offensive was so powerful that it drove deep into Allied positions in Belgium and Luxembourg, creating a distinctive "bulge" in the front line on the map. The clashes often took the form of close-quarters combat. The defense of Bastogne by American troops played a pivotal role; by halting the German advance, they hastened the eventual collapse of the Third Reich.
